History Hit is taking on one of the defining journeys of polar exploration with a new documentary following the route of Sir Ernest Shackleton’s historic crossing of South Georgia.
In November 2026, History Hit presenter Dan Snow will join polar explorer Preet Chandi MBE and John Shears, leader of the expedition that discovered Shackleton’s Endurance wreck in 2022, to retrace the route Shackleton, Frank Worsley and Tom Crean took in 1916.
What Will History Hit’s Shackleton Documentary Show?
The team will cross the remote and mountainous island using modern equipment and technology while confronting its challenging terrain, weather and isolation.
The documentary will explore the leadership, resilience and teamwork behind Shackleton’s expedition, while also highlighting South Georgia’s landscape and wildlife.
The project is being made in partnership with the South Georgia Heritage Trust (SGHT), which is currently working with the Friends of South Georgia Island to conserve the historic Manager’s Villa at the former Stromness Whaling Station.
A high-resolution 3D model of the Villa is also being created, allowing the public to explore the otherwise inaccessible site digitally.
History Hit founder and presenter Dan Snow said the project gives him the opportunity to continue exploring Shackleton’s story after taking part in the expedition that located Endurance.

Snow added that following Shackleton’s route will allow the team to share the story while experiencing the landscape and challenges firsthand.
SGHT Chief Executive Alison Neil said the documentary will bring South Georgia’s polar heritage to a wider audience and showcase the importance of preserving the island’s historic sites.
The digital recreation of the Villa will be unveiled following the crossing attempt, while the History Hit documentary is expected to premiere in spring 2027.
