HBO has officially renewed Task, one of the year’s most talked-about crime dramas, for a second season. The series, created by Brad Ingelsby, will continue its story with Mark Ruffalo set to return, alongside cast members Emilia Jones, Tom Pelphrey, Fabien Frankel, and Silvia Dionicio.
Set in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Task marks Ingelsby’s return to the region following Mare of Easttown. Drawing inspiration from elements of his own life, the series follows a crime investigation led by an FBI team under Ruffalo’s character.
The Season 1 finale aired on October 19 and delivered strong results, reaching 4 million viewers on its first night. With that performance, Task became one of the fastest-growing new titles on HBO and HBO Max, ranking among the top three.
“We knew well in advance of its launch that we had a powerful drama series on our hands, but it has been so rewarding to witness the audience’s fervor and embrace of this show as it grew week after week,” said Francesca Orsi, executive vice president of HBO Programming and head of HBO Drama Series and Films. “Rarely does a writer balance humanistic storytelling with intricate, explosive plotting but Brad Ingelsby is one of our industry’s greats and we have no doubt he will strike as profoundly and addictively once again in season two.”
“We’ve been incredibly fortunate to have HBO’s unwavering support of ‘Task’ from the very first script onwards, throughout production, and during their extraordinary launch of our first season to audiences,” said series creator and showrunner Brad Ingelsby in a statement. “They are an unmatched creative home. On behalf of the entire ‘Task’ team, in front of and behind the camera, I am honored and excited to get back to work on a second season of our show.”
Ingelsby remains under an overall deal with HBO, where he previously created the acclaimed limited series Mare of Easttown. He executive produces Task with Jeremiah Zagar and Salli Richardson-Whitfield. Additional executive producers include Paul Lee and Mark Roybal for wiip, Ruffalo, David Crockett, and Ron Schmidt, with Nicole Jordan-Webber and Jeremy Yaches of Public Record serving as co-executive producers.
