HBO Max has acquired the rights to Sony Pictures Television’s upcoming historical drama Carlota.
The series was first unveiled by Sony at the 2025 LA Screenings and tells the true story of Carlota de Habsburgo, the first empress of Mexico. Set in a country divided by war, the story follows European aristocrats Carlota and Maximilian as they rise to power and navigate political struggle and ambition. The series explores power, desire, betrayal and politics through a contemporary lens.
The 10-part series (10×45’) has begun filming in Spain. The ser’es is created by and showrun by Carlos Quintanilla Sakar, with Adriana Pelusi serving as head writer, and it is directed by Ana Lorena Pérez Ríos and Alejandro Bazzano.
Belinda Peregrín Schüll stars as the titular character, alongside Jaime Lorente as Maximilian.
Sony Pictures Television is handling global distribution.
