The acclaimed Gomorrah series, centered around the notorious Neapolitan mob, is set to return in January 2026 with its highly anticipated prequel, Gomorrah – The Series. The Origins.
The new series will explore the early years of mobster Pietro Savastano and his rise to power within the drug-dealing clan. The prequel was first announced during Sky Italy’s celebration of Gomorrah’s tenth anniversary, which is the country’s top TV export.
Set in 1977 in the Naples slum of Secondigliano, The Origins follows 16-year-old Savastano, the adopted son of a penniless family, and a street kid who dreams of a prosperous life. Young Savastano meets Angelo, also known as “A Sirena”, one of Secondigliano’s mob bosses, and gets entangled in the world of crime. According to the synopsis, “Amid violence, alliances and betrayals, Pietro discovers at his own expense the price that this life entails.”
In the prequel, Luca Lubrano, the 16-year-old talent from Naples, will portray the iconic mobster. Marco D’Amore, who starred as Ciro Di Marzio in the original Gomorrah, will direct and act as the artistic supervisor of the series, while Riccardo Tozzi will serve as the lead producer.
Tozzi said that for the new series, D’Amore is inspired by Once Upon a Time in America, a 1984 epic crime film on two childhood friends from New York’s Lower East Side who become powerful gangsters during the 1920s. The movie starred the legendary Robert De Niro and was co-written and directed by Italian filmmaker Sergio Leone.
Meanwhile, Gomorrah, which aired between the years 2014-2021, was adapted from Roberto Saviano’s book of investigative journalism with the same name. In the book, Saviano infiltrated the Neapolitan criminal organization Camorra, exposing their illegal activities and business connections.
Saviano is also on board for the prequel, and the shooting recently wrapped in Naples with only six episodes. Leonardo Fasoli and Maddalena Ravagli, the writers of Gomorrah, also returned for the new series, collaborating once again with D’Amore.

Nils Hartmann, who is EVP of Sky Studios Italy, commented that the prequel “is not just a marketing operation, a spin-off done because there is a brand that works,” he said. “We decided to do this show because there is another story tied to the Gomorrah characters that works by being set in another Naples,” Hartmann added.
Gomorrah – The Series. The Origins will be produced by Sky Studios and Cattleya, and will be distributed globally by Beta Film.
