Global SVOD subscriptions will increase by 321 million between 2023 and 2029 to reach 1.79 billion, according to a new report from Digital TV Research.

The US will lead the way in terms of growth, adding 30 million subscriptions, followed by India, up by 27 million, and Brazil, increasing 23 million.

Six US-based platforms will have 946 million SVoD subscribers collectively by 2029, up from 751 million in 2023. Netflix will remain the largest single platform, adding 44 million subscribers between 2023 and 2029 to reach 298 million, followed by Amazon which will have 269 million subscribers in 2029.

Disney+ will have more than 100 million fewer subscribers than Netflix in 2029, at 192 million, with significantly less investment and take-up in the Asia-Pacific region.

Paramount+ will have 89 million subscribers in 2029, while HBO will have 68 million and Apple TV+ will have 30 million.

SVOD STREAMERS OUTSIDE THE US

Other SVoD platforms in the US combined will have 148 million subscribers in 2029, while alternative platforms in India will make up 48 million subscriptions. SVoD streamers in China combined will have 391 million subscribers in 2029. Smaller SVoD platforms globally will collectively have 252 million subscribers in 2029.

Simon Murray, principal analyst at Digital TV Research, said: “Platforms now measure their success through their profitability. This means that already-profitable Netflix will benefit more than its US-based competitors.”
