The new The Lord of the Rings film has been in the works for some time now. The film, titled The Hunt for Gollum, was announced to be produced by Peter Jackson and directed by Andy Serkis.
There had been speculation about legendary actors Ian McKellen and Elijah Wood joining the cast. Ian McKellen has now confirmed that Gandalf and Frodo will meet again in Middle-Earth.
Ian McKellen commented on the film, saying: “It’s going to start filming in May. It’s going to be directed by Gollum, and it’s all about Gollum. But I’ll tell you two secrets about the casting. There’s a character in the movie called Frodo and another character called Gandalf, and apart from that, my lips are sealed.”
Even though he did not explicitly name Elijah Wood, he confirmed that Frodo will appear in the film. Elijah Wood has previously expressed interest in returning to the Lord of the Rings universe.
The Hunt for Gollum is written by Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens. The film is set before the events of Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring.
The Gollum-centered film is also expected to feature Aragorn. One of the film’s key story arcs will see Gandalf assigning Aragorn the mission to track down Gollum.
Filming is set to begin in the coming months and The Hunt for Gollum is scheduled to hit theaters on Dec. 17.
