Production has officially started on Star Wars: Starfighter, the latest entry in the Star Wars universe. The film will be directed by Shawn Levy, known for Deadpool & Wolverine, and Free Guy, with Ryan Gosling starring in the lead role. Lucasfilm has also released the first image from the set, featuring Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray.
In the photo, Gosling is seen sitting in a vehicle that closely resembles Luke Skywalker’s speeder from Star Wars: A New Hope. The first promotional message for the film highlighted that “a whole new adventure begins.”
Director Shawn Levy expressed his excitement about the project:
“I feel a profound sense of excitement and honor as we begin production on Star Wars: Starfighter. From the day Kathy Kennedy called me up, inviting me to develop an original adventure in this incredible Star Wars galaxy, this experience has been a dream come true, creatively and personally. Star Wars shaped my sense of what story can do, how characters and cinematic moments can live with us forever. To join this storytelling galaxy with such brilliant collaborators onscreen and off, is the thrill of a lifetime.”
So far, few details about the story have been revealed. Written by Jonathan Tropper, the script introduces an entirely new cast of characters and tells a standalone story set five years after the events of Star Wars: Episode IX – The Rise of Skywalker.
