AMC’s 1970s-set noir crime drama Dark Winds has been officially renewed for a fifth season ahead of its season four premiere.
Season four is set to premiere on February 15, 2026. Season five will consist of eight episodes, with filming scheduled to begin in March 2026 in Santa Fe, and a planned release in 2027.
The series is based on Tony Hillerman’s Leaphorn & Chee novels and follows three members of the Navajo Tribal Police investigating crimes across the American Southwest in the 1970s.
Showrunner John Wirth has emphasized that the series approaches classic crime storytelling through the perspective of the Navajo Nation.
AMC executives have highlighted the show’s character-driven narrative, its integration of Navajo culture and spirituality, and its striking cinematography as key elements behind its success.
George R. R. Martin and the late Robert Redford serve as executive producers. Redford made his final on-screen appearance in the series’ third season prior to his death.
The first season of Dark Winds was recently added to Netflix, while in the UK the series is available on Sky and NOW.
