The team behind Netflix’s hit series Cobra Kai is bringing back one of the most iconic TV shows of the 1980s, Knight Rider.
Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg, and Josh Heald will write and produce the new movie for Universal Pictures. The project is being developed with 87North (run by Kelly McCormick and David Leitch, known for Bullet Train and The Fall Guy) as well as Spyglass. The trio will also be involved through their own company, Counterbalance Entertainment.
A director hasn’t been chosen yet, and casting for the lead role is still unknown.
The original Knight Rider, which aired from 1982 to 1986, was created by Glen A. Larson and starred David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a crime-fighter working for a secret foundation. His partner was KITT, an advanced AI-powered talking car that became a pop culture legend.
Development on a Knight Rider film has been in motion for years, with a previous draft written by Kevin Burrows and Matt Mider. However, the new version will feature a completely fresh script from the Cobra Kai team.
Production details and release dates haven’t been announced yet.
