Ballard, the new crime drama that debuted last week on Prime Video, has quickly climbed to the top of the platform’s charts. A spin-off of the hit series Bosch, which ran from 2014 to 2021, Ballard has drawn strong attention from both critics and viewers.
Starring Maggie Q, the show focuses on cold cases in Los Angeles. Renée Ballard, a detective with the LAPD, takes charge of a newly formed cold case unit. Her mission is to reopen long-forgotten murder files and bring justice to victims whose cases were never solved. As she dives deeper into these investigations, Ballard finds herself trying to shine a light on the city’s darkest corners.
The series has been especially successful in the UK, where it’s currently the most-watched title on Prime Video. On Rotten Tomatoes, Ballard holds a rare 100% critic score.
Prime Video executives have expressed excitement over the show’s strong performance. And in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter Maggie Q shared her thoughts about a possible second season:
“I have no sense. This industry is not what it was before. It’s barely recognizable to me, and shows are so expendable. They can throw out a show in two seconds, and it doesn’t make a ton of difference that whole worlds and livelihoods are at stake. Studios always have options. But we have a writers room, and they’ve been writing away. The arc for the second season is very exciting. But I’ve had writers room hired before and then gotten cancelled. So everyone’s like, ‘Maggie, of course!’ I’m like, ‘No, no, no.’ There is no ‘of course.’ I am not a negative person at all. I’m a very positive person, but I’m a realist.”
Fans of crime dramas are closely following the series, which also stars Michael Mosley, Rebecca Field, Victoria Moroles, Amy Hill, and John Carroll Lynch.
