HBO’s upcoming Harry Potter series will explore Draco Malfoy’s home life in its first season, a storyline not introduced until the final book in J.K. Rowling’s novels.
Fourteen-year-old actor Lox Pratt, who plays Draco, says the series expands the narrative perspective of the books by moving beyond Harry Potter’s point of view.
While the Malfoy family home appears only late in the original novels, the HBO adaptation opens up this world much earlier. Showrunner Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod have taken a deliberate approach to broadening the story, aiming to explore characters and spaces that exist beyond Harry’s direct experience.
The series will also delve into teachers’ private lives, character dynamics outside of Hogwarts, and richer backstories for supporting characters. Lucius Malfoy’s appearance in the first season, despite debuting in the second book, fits into this expanded narrative framework.
Warner Bros. Discovery is already positioning the project as a potential “streaming event of the decade.” The long-form television format is expected to allow for storylines and details that could not be fully explored within the two-hour constraints of the film adaptations.
The Harry Potter series is currently expected to premiere in 2027.
